The Royal Mint released a £2 on the Duchess of Hamilton, built to haul the prestigious Coronation Scot service between London Euston and Glasgow. The steam locomotive, considered an achievement of British Art Deco engineering, was built in 1938 for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS).
Unlike many locomotives where the casing was purely aesthetic, the Duchess’s was designed to reduce air resistance. It featured a distinctive sloping front and gold leaf stripes that emphasized its length and speed. It was capable of producing over 3,300 horsepower. During its service life, it reached speeds of over 110 mph (177 km/h).
