Australia s first charity, The Benevolent Society was founded in May 1813 by banker and newspaper editor Edward Smith Hall. Since then, they have provided help and support to millions of Australians.
Edward Smith Hall (1786–1860) was a pivotal figure in early Australian history, best known for his fierce advocacy for a free press and the rights of convicts and emancipists (freed convicts). Before his career in journalism, Hall was a prominent figure in the fledgling financial sector of New South Wales.
